In support of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we have published a report with Altmetric that investigates the impact that plastic pollution is having on our oceans and what research is doing to help.
The oceans cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface, hold 97% of the world’s water, host some of the planet’s most diverse ecosystems, and support economies around the world. Plastic pollution is a problem of human origin and so controlling this problem is possible. To do so, it is crucial to build an evidence base for urgent action on marine pollution , and plastic waste in the oceans in particular.
In the report, we use Dimensions data to analyze the global research landscape of plastic pollution in oceans – looking at the volume of research publications in this field, and how many of these publications support the SDG goals through their areas of focus. We also use data from Altmetric to see trends in news coverage and discussion on research surrounding this topic, and assess the wider impact that this may have.
