Since adopting Dimensions in 2023, KGL Accucoms has embedded the platform into its strategic operations. It has become “an indispensable tool for our team,” explains Kirsty Stenhouse, Operations Manager. She elaborates: “Dimensions provides us with the ability to dive deep into real-world data and uncover insights in order to help drive strategy on behalf of our clients. It allows us to analyse customer behaviours and trends on a global scale, enabling us to better understand the needs and preferences of our clients across diverse markets.”

Supporting the transition to Open Access

As Open Access (OA) publishing continues to reshape the academic landscape, publishers are placing greater emphasis on author services and evolving their strategies to meet new expectations. With over 20 years of experience at the intersection of libraries and publishing, KGL Accucoms has seen this transformation unfold firsthand.

Librarians remain essential intermediaries – working closely with researchers and authors, facilitating access to resources, and guiding the transition to OA. At the same time, publishers are rethinking their business models and stakeholder relationships to ensure OA is central to their value proposition. As having OA content becomes a necessity rather than a differentiator, meaningful engagement with authors, and with the libraries that support them, is more important than ever.

Exploring publishing trends in global marketplaces

Each year, KGL Accucoms conducts an independent survey across its global network to gather direct feedback from librarians and provide publishers with actionable market insights. In 2024, the survey focused on librarians’ familiarity with and prioritisation of OA products.

Findings revealed that familiarity and reported publishing deals with OA publishers are rising in Asia and Europe, with Latin America reporting slightly lower awareness but still on an upward trajectory. Learn more by reading the full survey report.

Using Dimensions data to support survey findings

Dimensions has been instrumental in helping KGL Accucoms validate and confirm that the feedback they receive from librarians aligns with the broader trends in scholarly publishing. The platform’s global publication metrics provide a powerful lens through which to view long-term trends.

For example, figures from Dimensions show that 48% of all global publications in 2024 are OA, with steady growth since 2020. This trend is evident across various regions: in Asia, 47% of 2024 publications are OA; in Europe, 62%; and in Latin America, 61%. These figures reinforce the survey’s findings and offer a compelling, data-backed view of OA momentum.
